B\u00e1sicamente, la pregunta es \u00e9sta: <strong>\u00bfqu\u00e9 le pasa con la funci\u00f3n f(x) cuando x se acerca a alguna constante c?<\/strong> Existen variaciones de este tema, pero la idea b\u00e1sica es la misma en muchas circunstancias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podemos determinar \u00e1reas de rect\u00e1ngulos y tri\u00e1ngulos por medio de f\u00f3rmulas de geometr\u00eda; pero, \u00bfqu\u00e9 hay de regiones con fronteras curvas, como un c\u00edrculo? Arqu\u00edmedes tuvo esta idea hace m\u00e1s de dos mil a\u00f1os. Imagine pol\u00edgonos regulares inscritos en un c\u00edrculo, como se muestra en la siguiente figura:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"102\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/lash.utrng.edu.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lash.utrng.edu.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-9.png 102w, https:\/\/lash.utrng.edu.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-9-96x300.png 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 102px) 100vw, 102px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Arqu\u00edmedes determin\u00f3 el \u00e1rea de un pol\u00edgono regular con <strong>n<\/strong> lados, y tomando el pol\u00edgono cada vez con m\u00e1s lados fue capaz de aproximar el \u00e1rea de un c\u00edrculo a cualquier nivel de precisi\u00f3n. En otras palabras, <strong>el \u00e1rea del c\u00edrculo es el l\u00edmite de las \u00e1reas de los pol\u00edgonos<\/strong> inscritos cuando n (el n\u00famero de lados del pol\u00edgono) aumenta tanto como se quiera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considere la gr\u00e1fica de la funci\u00f3n y = <em>f(x),<\/em> para a &lt;= x >= b. Si la gr\u00e1fica es una l\u00ednea recta, la longitud de la curva es f\u00e1cil de determinar mediante la f\u00f3rmula de la distancia. Sin embargo, \u00bfqu\u00e9 sucede si la gr\u00e1fica es curvada? Para tales funciones, se introduce el concepto de <strong>l\u00edmites laterales<\/strong>.
